"Herreshoff 18-24 Sailboats
Length over all 23 1/2 ft.
Length, water line 18' 9"
Beam 6' 3"
Draft 1' 11"
Sail area approximately 270 square feet. Keel and frame, white oak.
Planking: Cedar, single, fastened with brass screws.
Deck: Cedar, covered with canvas and painted.
Ballast: Lead, approximately 1580 lbs. moulded to form and securely bolted to keel with bronze bolts.
Centerboard: Oak.
Centerboard Trunk: Of bronze, welded to avoid the possibility of trouble from worms and leaking.
Metal Fittings: All of bronze to Herreshoff patterns.
Spars: Mast, hollow, others solid, all clear spruce.
Rig: Leg-o-mutton jib and mainsail with winches for both halyards.
Equipment: Herreshoff anchor, cable, mooring line, pump, bucket, sponge, mop, boat hook, compass, lantern, fog horn, lead and line, 2 life preservers, boom crotch, mainsail and jib covers, reefing line and stops.
This is a flush deck water tight or self bailing cockpit type boat designed by Mr. Herreshoff for use where a larger and faster boat than the 12 1/2 and 16 footers is desired, in which he has incorporated the semi-sharp and flaring forward section which enables these boats to perform satisfactorily in choppy waters, and has modeled longer, straighter under water lines with sufficient ballast to give proper sail carrying power for speed. Safety has been provided for by the flush deck and water tight cockpit, and this type of construction also gives most ample deck room.
The shallow draft of less than two feet enables these boats to be used in many places where there has been no satisfactory Class before, and all the previous objections to centerboard type have been avoided by the bronze Centerboard casing with all welded joints. The boat can sail to windward without the centerboard, to get into or out of harbors in shallow water, and the centerboard has been made sufficiently strong so that it is not likely to be damaged by accidental grounding when down.
White topside, green bottom and tan deck with bright trim is the standard finish but other colors optional if specified before boat is built." (Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. Herreshoff Yachts. Bristol, Rhode Island, ca. 1931, p. 50.)

"The A. Sydney DeW. Herreshoff Room at the Herreshoff Marine Museum was formally dedicated Sunday afternoon, marking another important milestone in the history and tradition of Herreshoff boat-building in this town. Also, an important part of the program was the acceptance by the museum of the 30-foot sloop Bambino [#616s], donated by Louis B. Off, of Linwood, N.J.
Presided over by Halsey C. Herreshoff, the ceremonies were attended by a large crowd of invited guests, all of whom were greatly impressed with the display of items relating to the accomplishments of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. ... The museum is located in part of one of the buildings formerly used by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., at 18 Burnside Street, near the corner of Hope. In his remarks at the dedication Mr Halsey Herreshoff said that the site was where J. B. Herreshoff once had his home. ...
Among the gifts and contributors to the museum are the following: Power boat THANIA [#248p ex-Toddy Wax] by Daniel A. Newhall; Sloop BAMBINO by Louis B. Off; Launch '240' [#240p] by Gordon B. MacPherson; Sloop MIST II [#1164s ex-Louise Ann] by William L. Taggart, Jr.; Marlin Class Sloop [apparently #1421s] by John R Bumstead; Cat Yawl CYGNET [#1203s] by Capt Paul Hammond; Dinghy by A Sydney DeW. Herreshoff; Rowboat by Halsey C Herreshoff II; 1878 Steam Engine [apparently 2 1/2" & 4 1/4" x 5" built between 1881 and 1885] by Fred Simmons; Triple Expansion Engine by John Francis Brown; Capstan and Steering Stand from RESOLUTE by Isaac B Merriman Jr; Photographs by Mr and Mrs Paul A Darling; Bell used by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co, by Anthony A Nunes and Isaac B Merriman Jr; Herreshoff Steam Engine and Boiler [2 1/2" x 3 1/2" from 1891], by Henry Luther and Mrs Wirth Munroe. ..." Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.
