We were under the following sails. Mainsail A 3/0 Forestaysail A-No 1 Jib A-No 1 Club Topsail A-1 Shortly after getting under way the forestaysail curled considerably in the after leech, and was taken down, being replaced by the 'Ratsey' fore staysail. On reaching Matinicock Pt the wind was flat calm and at 11.50 AM the, 'Committee boat,' signaled, 'race postponed untill later in the day. For over an hour the Reliance and Columbia drifted about. The Constitution was unable to start on account of the injury she sustained on Monday May 18 {1903/05/18} while being hauled hoisted out on the 'railway'. The whistle blew and the American ensign was hoisted at 1.24 PM. While manouvering for a position the wind was very light S.W. and staysail lowered and replaced by Balloon for staysail B on the stay but not broken out until 1.55 Five seconds later the Balloon Jib topsail 2 B. replaced the A-1 jib.
